This course expands the U.S. version of Electric Industry Overview to include specific information on Canadian consumers, generation, regulation and deregulation, and markets (examples include data on Canadian electric customers and information on Canadian regulatory structure).

You’ll learn about customers and their needs, how the physical system is designed and operated, how and why the electric industry is regulated, how the industry has been restructured and how this has changed the roles of various market participants, how markets work and the various electric services offered in them, and much more. The course comprises seven modules: an introduction as well as Electricity Customers, the Electric Delivery System, Electric Operations, Electric Regulation, Electricity Marketplace Overview, and The Future of Electricity.

This course provides an in-depth description of electric markets in the U.S. and how they function. The course begins with an overview of the various monopoly and competitive markets found in the U.S. today and a look at the forces that drive supply and demand in electricity markets and how this impacts the marginal cost. The types of electric markets found in the U.S. today are then discussed as well as the specific services that are traded in these markets. The course then focuses on the way in which resources are acquired and scheduled under each of the trading arrangements models found in the U.S. today (wheeling model, integrated ISO model, and decentralized ISO model). The course concludes with a look at the strategies used by four common market participants to manage risk and maximize earnings.

This course focuses on the physical electrical system and takes you on a tour from the generator to the customer meter. You'll learn common industry jargon and the basic physical laws of electricity, how generators work, which generation types are commonly used and why, how a system of generators is used to serve a customer load curve, the components that make up transmission and distribution systems, how transmission and distribution systems are designed and operated, the different types of service configurations and when they are used, how electricity is metered, and much more.

You'll learn about the primary renewable resources used to generate electricity, the technologies used for each resource, and how each technology actually works. You will also learn the key attributes that determine the benefits, costs and challenges associated with each renewable generation technology and the future potential for each resource. The course is comprised of six modules; an introduction as well as Wind Power, Solar Power, Geothermal Power, Biopower, and Hydro and Hydrokinetic Power.
